Visiting The Galapagos In January

Since I just got back from Santa Cruz Island, I can tell you firsthand that the islands are transforming into a lush, green paradise this time of year. January marks the beginning of the “warm and wet” season, which is actually a favorite for many locals.
January Temperature & Humidity In The Galapagos

The air temperature in January is pleasantly warm, making it feel like a true tropical escape. You can expect daytime highs to reach around 84°F (29°C), while the evenings stay mild at approximately 70°F (21°C).
Because this is the start of the warm season, the humidity does begin to rise. You will definitely feel that tropical “stickiness” in the air, especially during the sunny mornings before the breeze picks up.
Water Temperature & Snorkeling
If you are a fan of snorkeling, January is one of the best months to be in the water. The average water temperature is 74°F (23°C), which is significantly warmer than the chilly months later in the year.
The Panama Current brings clearer water to the archipelago during this time. This increased visibility makes it much easier to spot rays and sea turtles without needing a thick wetsuit for warmth.
Rainfall & Tropical Showers
Don’t let the “wet season” label scare you off from visiting. While January sees about 2 inches of rain, it usually doesn’t rain all day or ruin your plans.
Most of the rainfall happens in the form of short, intense afternoon bursts. These tropical showers are actually quite refreshing and help keep the islands looking vibrant and green.
Galapagos Wildlife Activity in January

The first rains of the year act as a wake-up call for many of the island’s famous residents. Land birds, including Darwin’s finches, begin nesting almost as soon as the landscape starts to turn green.
On Española Island, you can see marine iguanas changing colors to bright reds and greens for the mating season. Additionally, green sea turtles are frequently seen on the beaches as they begin their nesting period.
