Mitad Del Mundo: Visiting The Middle Of The World
Mitad Del Mundo: Visiting the Equator Line in Ecuador

If you’re visiting Ecuador and looking for something fun and affordable to do, Mitad Del Mundo (Middle of the World City) is an easy choice. This is where you can stand right on the equator line, snap some cool pictures, and check out a bunch of exhibits that explain the science and history behind it.
I went there myself and had a great time. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Mitad Del Mundo, how to get there, what to expect, and why it’s worth the trip!
How to Get to Mitad Del Mundo from Quito
Getting to Mitad Del Mundo from downtown Quito is super easy. I just called an Uber, and in about 30 minutes, I was there. The round-trip cost was only $25, which was way less than I expected.
If you’re on a tighter budget, you can also take a bus, but honestly, an Uber or taxi is the best way to go. It saves time, and you don’t have to worry about multiple transfers.
Entrance Fee and What’s Inside
Once you arrive, the entrance fee is only about $5-$7, making this a really affordable activity.
But there’s way more than just the equator monument! Here’s what you can expect inside:
- The Main Equator Monument – This is the big, famous tower where everyone takes pictures.
- Mini-museums – These share facts about Ecuador’s geography, indigenous cultures, and astronomy.
- The Galapagos Exhibit – A small section with information about the famous Galapagos Islands.
- An Indigenous Village – A replica of what life was like for Ecuador’s indigenous people, showing their homes, tools, and way of living.
- Gift Shops and Restaurants – Plenty of places to grab a drink, a snack, or souvenirs.
The Famous Equator Line
This is why most people visit Mitad Del Mundo! There’s a bright yellow equator line painted on the ground where you can take all kinds of fun pictures.

People love doing things like:
- Standing with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Doing push ups over the equator 👀
- Jumping over the line.
- Taking a kissing photo with their partner over the equator.
It’s one of those “must-do activities” when you’re in Ecuador!
Climbing the Monument

The monument itself is not just an empty tower. Inside, there’s a huge gift shop, and as you climb up, there are several floors with exhibits explaining how the equator was discovered.
At the very top, there’s an observation deck where you get an amazing view of the entire area. You can see the nearby houses, businesses, and the surrounding Andean landscape. It’s a great spot to take in the scenery.
Unexpected Bonus: Exotic Cars
When I visited, I was surprised to see a bunch of exotic sports cars parked on the main lawn. I have no idea what was going on, but it was pretty cool to see modern luxury cars at such a historic site. So you never know what extra surprises might be waiting when you visit!
Food, Drinks, and Shopping
If you get hungry or thirsty, there are several restaurants and small food stands around the property. You can grab a bottle of water, a local beer, or some snacks.
The gift shops sell a variety of souvenirs, from handmade crafts to Ecuadorian chocolate. If you want to take home a cool memory, this is the place to grab something!
Is Mitad Del Mundo Worth Visiting?
Absolutely! It’s a fun, easy, and budget-friendly activity that gives you some cool photos, a little history, and a unique travel experience. If you have a few hours to spare in Quito, this is definitely worth adding to your Ecuador itinerary.
