  • I don’t promote drinking and driving but it common for people to have a beer while driving around in their golf cart. But DO NOT start driving around after you had a lot to drink. You will get a ticket, arrested, or injured.
  • Watchout for street scammers. There are the same individuals all of the time asking you to buy them a chicken or young kids selling way over priced necklaces and bracelets.

Getting to San Pedro From Belize City

To reach San Pedro, your initial step involves flying into Belize City (Philip Goldson International Airport) From there, you have two main choices for your onward journey: a brief flight via Tropic Air or Maya Air, or a water taxi. Water taxis typically offer a more economical, though slower, alternative to flights. Regardless of your chosen method, it’s advisable to book in advance to secure your passage. Once you arrive in San Pedro, you can simply unwind and soak in all the island has to offer. Each option comes with its own advantages and disadvantages, so careful consideration of your priorities is key before making your decision.

Flying To San Pedro

A Tropic Air plane is being fueled up on the runway.

Benefits:

  • Rapid transit: Reach the island in 20 minutes or less from Philip Goldson.
  • You can enjoy a cold beer or margarita while waiting for your flight.
  • Avoids seasickness concerns.

Considerations:

  • Higher cost compared to a water taxi, typically around $100 USD.
  • Requires additional shuttle transportation from the airport to your accommodation.
  • Limited flight options, primarily through Tropic Air and Maya Island Air.
  • If your departure point isn’t near an airport, factor in additional ground transportation costs. Evaluate these pros and cons carefully to determine the best choice for you.

Water Taxi From to San Pedro

Two Belize water taxis docked at the terminal in Belize City. In the background you can see the Bliss performing arts center.

Benefits:

  • More affordable than flying and there is a nice coffee shop called Bleu in the water taxi terminal.
  • Greater luggage allowance, as there are no strict weight restrictions.
  • Offers picturesque views of Belize’s stunning coastline en route to the island.

Considerations:

  • The journey can extend up to 1.5 hours, making it less ideal if time is of the essence. There is always a stop in Caye Caulker and sometimes at Caye Chapel.
  • This does not happen often, but I’ve experienced it twice. Breakdowns and malfunctions. They once drove over a buoy and the rope got caught around the propeller and a team of divers had to come out.
  • Potential for seasickness during the crossing, but if you sit up top you are good.

Getting Around San Pedro

If you’re planning a visit to San Pedro, Belize, you might be wondering about the best ways to navigate the island. While numerous transportation options exist, each comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. This section will break down the most popular methods of transport in San Pedro, Belize, to help you determine which is right for you.

Walking

Walking stands as the most fundamental way to get around, also being the most economical and convenient, especially for nearby destinations. However, walking can be impractical in certain scenarios—such as when carrying substantial luggage or needing to cover significant distances. And let’s be honest, sometimes the heat just makes walking less appealing!

Bicycles

Cycling is another widely used mode of transportation in San Pedro, Belize. Biking offers a fantastic way to combine exercise with getting around town and is also an eco-friendly option. The drawbacks of cycling include potential fatigue (especially in the heat) and reduced safety, as you’re more exposed to road accidents. Additionally, you cannot carry as much as you might on foot or by golf cart.

Golf Carts

In San Pedro, golf carts are everywhere. You’ll see them cruising the streets, parked outside shops, and even functioning as taxis. Golf carts are an excellent means of transport—they’re quick enough to make getting from place to place effortless, yet slow enough to allow you to soak in the scenery. They are also relatively affordable to rent (if you choose not to purchase one). On the downside, golf carts are not particularly environmentally friendly and can be hazardous if operated carelessly.

Golf Cart Rentals In San Pedro

Golf cart rentals in San Pedro have become extremely popular, and that means you now have many rental options. I have probably rented carts from half a dozen different rental agencies and for the most part are very affordable.

One thing to always check is the amount of gas in your tank before leaving the rental location. I once ran out of gas on my way to Secret Beach and I had get the rental agency to come and deliver fuel 😄

Here are a few of the places I have rented golf carts from:

  1. Rock’s Golf Cart Rentals
  2. ATM Golf Cart Rentals
  3. Tropical Golf Cart Rentals
  4. Isla Bonita Golf Cart Rentals
  5. Aviz Golf Cart Rental

Taxis

For swift transportation without the fuss of renting a golf cart or driving yourself, a taxi is your best bet. Taxis are abundant in San Pedro, Belize, and generally quite affordable (though fares will vary based on distance). The main inconvenience of taking a taxi is the need to hail one whenever you require a ride—which can be challenging in remote areas or late at night.

How Many Days Are Ideal for San Pedro, Belize?

San Pedro is a vibrant small town located on Ambergris Caye, Belize. Despite being only about 5 miles long and 1 mile wide, San Pedro offers a wealth of attractions for visitors. From snorkeling and diving in the world-renowned Blue Hole to exploring its numerous shops and restaurants, San Pedro truly has something for everyone.

Ten days is often considered the ideal duration to thoroughly explore San Pedro’s offerings. However, if your plans include extensive exploration of the town and participation in various activities, you might find that a week or more is preferable. Ultimately, the length of your stay is a personal decision. But one thing is certain, San Pedro promises an unforgettable experience.

Investing in Belizean Property

San Pedro Island in Belize is celebrated as a stunning travel destination. Its brilliant turquoise waters, soft white-sand beaches, and spectacular coral reefs make it a coveted spot for scuba diving, snorkeling, and general beach enjoyment. But San Pedro is also an exceptional location for property investment. If you’re considering an investment or a vacation home, here are three prime options on the island.

Turnkey Developments

For a streamlined and hassle-free approach to acquiring property in San Pedro, turnkey developments are an excellent choice. With turnkey projects, the developer manages every aspect, from the initial purchase to the construction of the property. Margaritaville Belize stands as one of our most popular properties for this type of investment.

All you need to do is select your unit and anticipate its completion—Margaritaville is slated to open in March 2023, with units already 90% complete. Because this development enjoys a prime beachfront location on the island, it represents an outstanding investment poised for appreciation over time.

Condos

Condominiums present another fantastic option for those looking to buy property in San Pedro. Unlike turnkey developments, condos are already constructed and available for immediate purchase. This means you don’t have to wait for construction to finish before enjoying your new vacation home. Furthermore, as condos are frequently sold fully furnished, they are an ideal choice for owners who wish to rent out their property when not in personal use.

Land

For individuals desiring absolute control over their property acquisition, purchasing land is the preferred path. With land, you have the freedom to construct your own home or business from the ground up, exactly to your specifications—there’s no need to compromise on location or design. Given that land is a limited resource in San Pedro, it constitutes an excellent investment likely to increase in value over time.

San Pedro Island, Belize, is an outstanding location for property acquisition, whether your aim is an investment or a vacation retreat. A variety of property types are available on the island, ensuring you’ll find something that aligns with your needs and budget. If you’re contemplating buying property on San Pedro Island, explore turnkey developments, condos, and land—these are among the top investment avenues on the island!
