Why Do I Choose To Work Remotely?

Big cities, tons of nature, and a lower cost of living.
Benefits Of Remote Work: How It Can Transform Your Life!
There are many advantages to working remotely, such as flexibility in hours, ability to adjust locations with ease, minimal costs, increased productivity, and more.
What is remote work? It goes beyond work-from-home. Remote work refers to any job wherein you perform job duties outside of a traditional office environment. There are dozens upon dozens of types of remote work, most of which use digital tools and cloud-based resources. Companies across every category of business and industry are embracing flexible work-from-home (hybrid work) and remote work job arrangements.
Let’s jump in and explore some of the top benefits of remote work.
1. You Can Go Anywhere And Live Anywhere
An easy answer to the question of why become a remote worker is because you can see as many new places as you wish, go where you like, and vacation when you want. Many remote workers, like me, travel abroad and see cities, regions, and countries we’ve always wanted to explore, while still maintaining a regular 37.5-hour a week job. The entire time, you can be saving money as well should you choose to venture to more affordable and less expensive cities and countries.
2. You Choose The Environment You Want To Work In
An office can be noisy, distracting, and cold. Not everyone thrives in such a setting. As a remote worker, you choose the environment you work in. If you need peace and quiet, you can have it. If you perform better around others, there are cafes and co-working spaces where you can heighten your productivity and creative thinking. Set up an office or workspace arrangement that allows you to express yourself and be productive without having to be judged or managed by others.
3. Avoid Office Politics And Work Independently
Interpersonal conflicts and office drama are not everyone’s cup of tea. Remote work environments eliminate the politics of having to work in-person with other personalities. You can focus more on your deliverables. For any organization, this leads to healthier team dynamics, less emotional exhaustion, and far fewer conflicts. For you, the worker, this puts your energy in the right place and that’s your performance, rather than worrying about someone else.
4. There Is Far Less Stress As A Remote Worker
Remote work also tends to lead to less stress and improved mental health. Stressors, such as having to rush to work, navigating office politics, or working a long day are far better managed in remote work. In fact, you can take a break when you need to if things are starting to feel stressed for whatever reason. Remote work puts the control in your hands to live a stress-free life in both your personal and professional setup.
5. More Control Over Your Health And Wellness
Slashing the amount of time that work fits into your day and being able to control when, where, and how, this means you can set aside the time to take as many breaks as you like, prepare healthy meals at home, and even set aside time mid-day to exercise. For days when you need to sleep, you may even be able to delay your work day thereby ensuring your mind and body are being properly supported no matter what life hits you with.
6. Freedom To Pursue The Work-Life Balance You Deserve
If there’s one word to summarize what remote work is, it’s freedom. Integrate your personal and professional responsibilities into a life that works for you. Balance your job in the way that is most optimal for you. Whether you’re a young professional who loves to travel, a parent with young children, a caregiver to a family member or friend, or if you yourself have a health condition that impacts your ability to work, you have the freedom to design your work-life balance the way you want.
7. Save A Ton Of Money From Working Remotely
Going to work is expensive. A routine worker pays for the commute, parking, coffee, lunch and snacks throughout the day, and more. A few dollars here and there add up at the end of the month. It could easily equate to hundreds of dollars spent on at, on the way to, and being around work. This does not even mention the costs of childcare if you have young children who need looking after. Remote working saves a substantial amount, saving more of your income to spend on smarter purchases.
8. No More Wasted Time On Daily Commutes
A commute one-way to or from work may take 20, 30, or 60 minutes, sometimes longer. When I was living in British Columbia, I easily spent around 90 minutes per day driving to and from work 😬 and I did this for nearly 3 years. The only reason this lasted so long was because I had a great team and didn’t mind the work.
With remote work, there are no more daily commutes. This saves you a ton of time, avoiding long drives or crowded public transit. You can repurpose commuting time into productive work activities or more fulfilling personal activities. There is no need to wake up extra early or take additional minutes getting ready when you cut the commute out of your typical work day.
9. Create Your Own Hours To Match Your Peak
With a flexible schedule, you can schedule work to occur during your peak performance period or when you know you will be best prepared to manage work. A remote worker manages their own schedule. If you work better in the mornings, work in the mornings. Meanwhile, others work better in the evening or afternoon. As long as you’re working and meeting your deadlines, the precise hours you work are relevant only to you.
10. Increase Your Productivity And Motivation To Work
You dictate the terms of a remote work position. The fact that you get to decide the hours and conditions of your work often translates to higher productivity. This also is a result of fewer workplace distractions. You can focus on work more effectively and in turn, you as well as your employer will see the difference. Some people report up to a 30% increase in productivity. That said, if you don’t set up a work environment in which you’re free from distractions and are comfortable, the opposite effect could occur.
11. Your Job Prospects Widen And You Go Global
As a remote worker, you are not tied to your region in searching for employment. You can search out companies globally to which you can apply. Don’t treat geography as a barrier. More companies are searching for remote workers all over the world in an effort to get the best talent they can. You have the opportunity to be that talent. This level of access means there’s no shortage of work. It’s purely a matter of finding the right jobs, applying, and securing positions with long-term viability.
12. Streamlined Communication Tools
Many non-remote workers believe that remote work is isolating. It rarely is, assuming you’re working with the right companies. There are dozens of communication tools – such as Slack, Zoom, Asana, Monday and more – that can help keep collaboration and communications clear. From the perspective of both company and contractor or employer and employee, remote work promotes accountability. It requires clarifying work expectations, job duties, and tasks.
These are all reasons why remote work is growing in popularity. Prioritize your own freedom and autonomy, and go remote. It benefits you and, in nearly all cases, offers advantages to a company as well. This isn’t a trend that’s going away.
More workers are gathering confidence in not only asking but outright demanding the right to work remotely. With so many different types of remote jobs, there’s no question a foundational shift in employment is taking place. Consider doing it for yourself. There are too many advantages not to. Embrace the flexibility and benefits of remote work to discover everything that’s possible.
